Westfield Washington School District Uses 5Lab for Continuous School Improvement

Posted on Aug 30, 2019 10:58:35 AM

This Indiana K-12 school district is using student data dashboards to make better data-informed decisions and improve student outcomes.

My name is Lynn Schemel and I am the Data Systems and Assessment Coordinator at Westfield Washington School District in Indiana. As a district focused on continuous quality growth, the data team is continually challenged to gather and analyze data for strategic planning, school improvement plans, and professional learning community meetings. During my tenure, our district has used data from four different disparate data warehouses. The data information our team has provided to our leadership team has been as accurate as possible, but we continue to strive to do better based on our experiences with data visualization tools, our student management system, and our data (results) resource sites. With each data warehouse, we knew the district could be making better data-driven decisions at the district, building, and student levels by using a tool that combined the best features from each.

Prior to purchasing 5Lab, Westfield Washington was using a data visualization tool to help guide decision making. However, with our subscription ending and the need for better pricing and enhanced features, we turned to Forecast5. One of the greatest value points for us when considering 5Lab was the ability to create custom dashboards that support Indiana’s mandate to report on Graduation Pathways. We discovered how easy and timely it would be to have our data automatically pulled from our Student Information System (SIS), into 5Lab and run customized reports that can then be shared with all stakeholders for enhanced transparency.

Another key feature that was important to our district was the ability for staff to use the tool customized at their level. This enables all staff to inform practices, analyze data, and facilitate discussions on key areas that go beyond instruction – business, human resources, financial, etc. 5Lab is a district-wide tool and a “one stop shop” for our needs.

Over the summer months, Westfield Washington administrators were busy working on the upcoming school year’s improvement plans. The first project we have lined up is to put the data into the tool so the staff can monitor their plans throughout the year and make adjustments along the way. Our goal as a district is continuous quality growth. We want to empower our staff and make the data and tool useful for them…and ultimately the students we are serving!
